French Inspired Pots

April 30, 2009

FrenchPots.jpg Encrusted with a thick coat of glaze, rustic antique pots from the Provence region of France have caught the attention of designers for many years. Imitate the warmth and character of these pots on modern day pottery with a few tricks using Design Master COLORTOOL Sprays.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Design Master Sprays - COLORTOOL Sprays ALMOND, WALNUT WOOD TONE, MESS MASTER, SAFFRON, HUNTER GREEN (or desired colors), MASTER SHINE or DRESDEN CLEAR GLAZE - 4" terra cotta rose pot or terra cotta style of choice

TECHNIQUE

  1. Spray two light coats of Almond over the lower 2/3rds of pot. Then with short bursts of spray, splatter paint in this area with Walnut Wood Tone.
  2. Again with short bursts, spray this area with Mess Master to erratically blend colors together. Let dry.
  3. Hold the bottom of the pot with the rim turned sideways. Disregarding the label directions, point the nozzle close to the rim and spray a heavy coat of Saffron or Hunter Green around the rim and slightly below. As paint runs begin, rotate the pot to create an irregular edge. Allow paint to set before placing it upright. Let dry.
  4. Spray rimof pot heavily with Dresden Clear Glaze or triple thick Master Shine. Let drips run. For more control of drip pattern, hold pot as in step 3 and rotate to area desired for runs. Let dry.
To create the weathered look on pots to the right
  1. Lightly spray Hunter Green just below the rim. Then spray Mess Master over this to disipate the color. Let dry.
  2. At the base of the pots spray ColorTEX FLURRY to mimic salt accumulations.
Project Tip: To splatter color using an aerosol, push the spray tip forward while pressing down. Apply in short bursts. This will cause the spray to splatter. Normal application is to press straight down. MESS MASTER is the solvent to the sprays, it will blend the colors together.

CD Tower

Cd%20tower%20copy.jpg

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Design Master Sprays- Home Decor Stain CHARCOAL, MACINTOSH, FOREST, THISTLE - Clear Finish MATTE Fine Grade Sandpaper - Tack Cloth - Soft Cloth or Paper Towel - Unfinished Wood CD Storage Unit - Silver Knobs

Cd%20tower%20sm.jpg

TECHNIQUE

  1. Remove knobs from drawers.
  2. Sand all surfaces of cabinet with fine grade sandpaper. Remove dust with a tack cloth.
  3. For the cabinet shell, use Home Décor Stain CHARCOAL. -- It is easier to apply the stain to segments of the cabinet, ie. right-side, back, left-side, bottom, top. Apply CHARCOAL close to wood until the surface is wet and glossy. Immediately wipe stain into grain with a soft cloth. (This step accentuates the wood grain. If an area of stain dries before wiping, simply spray additional stain to surface or into rag. It will reactivate the stain on the wood surface.) Don't worry about evenness of stain color. Different woods absorb the stain differently, but with following steps, the color can be evened out. Repeat this technique on all sides and surfaces of the cabinet.
  4. Let surface dry for a couple of minutes then apply an even coat of stain by spraying approx 12" from surface in a back and forth motion. Using this technique, you can even out the color from step 3 if needed. Apply stain to all sides of cabinet in this manner.
  5. Repeat Step 4 to deepen the color. The more coats applied, the deeper the color. The cabinet photographed has 2 light coats over the initial wiped coat.
  6. Allow surface to dry approx. 15 minutes. Then, seal the surface with several coats of CLEAR FINISH MATTE by spraying with the back and forth motion, 12" from surface. Allow finish to dry between coats. While the finish dries to the touch in minutes, the surface cures to a durable finish in 8 hours.
  7. Repeat Steps 3, 4, 5, and 6 on individual drawers using the MACINTOSH, FOREST and THISTLE stains. On the drawers, the stain was sprayed slightly heavier around perimeter of drawer to create a highlight in the center.
  8. Modern silver knobs were purchased to update the cabinet's look.
