TECHNIQUE

  1. Remove veneer sections from chair frame.

(The stain has an approx. 2 minute open time. Work in sections, spraying only the area you have time to work. If stain becomes too dry to rub simply reapply more stain in that area.)
  4. To even out and enhance the color, spray the stain approx. 12” from surface in even parallel strokes. Since the stain is translucent, additional coats will deepen the color. Apply as many coats needed to achieve the desired depth of color. (3 light coats used here) Let dry between coats.
  5. For an ultra smooth finish, sand the stained surface with a piece of paper. This ultra-fine sanding removes any airborne imperfections that might have landed in the finish.
  6. Protect the surface with 2 coats of Clear Finish Matte. Apply by spraying approx. 10”-12” from surface. Let dry between applications.

    TECHNIQUE

    Jack-o-Lantern Pillow
    1. Cut two 17" squares from the duck cloth.
    2. On a 18-20" square of posterboard sketch a pumpkin shape, sizing it to fit within a 15" square. Cut out the shape with an exacto knife to create a stencil.
    3. Ready a flat painting area and protect from overspray with newspaper. Lay 1 piece of fabric on newspaper then place the pumpkin stencil centered on top of fabric. Ensure all fabric edges are masked.
    4. Make sure the edges of the pumpkin stencil are flush to the fabric. If not, weight the posterboard down with weights such as rocks. Spray a light coat of Orange within the stencil. Let dry and reapply 1 or 2 more coats. Let thoroughly dry.
    5. With the black Sharpie draw a stem, nose and jagged mouth. Fill in as needed.
    6. Make large circles for eyes using the Yellow Glow dimensional paint. Let dry.
    7. Attach black buttons with embroidery floss and highlight mouth with chain stitching.
    8. Allowing for a 1/2" seam allowance, sew ball fringe to right side of painted fabric square. Place right sides of fabric together and stitch, leaving an 8" opening. Turn fabric inside out and stuff pillow. Stitch opening closed.
    Mummy Pillow

    4. To make an iron-on transfer of the mummy face, lay strips of the muslin in a slightly irregular fashion on a 15" square of fuseable web. Keeping in mind a rough shape of the head, cut a short strip for the top of the head and adhere/iron to webbing. Cut a second strip and place it next to the first slightly overlapping the edges. Fuse in place. Cut the next strip slightly longer and fuse in place next to the previous strip with one side crossing over the previous one. Repeat this process, alternating placement of strips, to create the full head. In areas where fabric overlaps place a small piece of webbing and fuse loose strip down.
    5. Sketch the outline of a mummy head on fabric and cut out the shape.
    6. To make eyes, glue 2 pom poms together on fabric for each eye. Fuse a strip of webbing to 2 strips of muslin. Place strips over eyes in an overlapping fashion and fuse into place. Trim length of strips.
    7. Place mummy transfer on 1 piece of pillow fabric and fuse into place.
    8. Allowing for a 1/2" seam allowance, sew ball fringe to right side of pillow square. Place right sides of fabric together and stitch, leaving an 8" opening. Turn fabric inside out and stuff pillow. Stitch opening closed.
    Monster Pillow
    1. Cut two 17" squares from the duck cloth.
    2. With masking tape create a basic 14" square outline on the right-side of one fabric square. Tape off area for protruding knobs. Mask remaining exposed fabric edges with tape.
    3. Ready a flat painting area and protect from overspray with newspaper.
    4. Ensure all taped edges are adhered to fabric edges. Spray a light coat of Olive Bright on exposed fabric. Let dry and reapply 1 or 2 more coats. Let thoroughly dry.
    5. With the black dimensional paint draw the hair, hairline and eyes on face. Fill in as needed. Let dry.
    6. Thread needle with purple chenille and stich into fabric creating the nose, mouth and scars.
    7. Allowing for a 1/2" seam allowance, sew ball fringe to right side of painted fabric square. Place right sides of fabric together and stitch, leaving an 8" opening. Turn fabric inside out and stuff pillow. Stitch opening closed.

FrenchPots.jpg Encrusted with a thick coat of glaze, rustic antique pots from the Provence region of France have caught the attention of designers for many years. Imitate the warmth and character of these pots on modern day pottery with a few tricks using Design Master COLORTOOL Sprays.

    TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Design Master Sprays - COLORTOOL Sprays ALMOND, WALNUT WOOD TONE, MESS MASTER, SAFFRON, HUNTER GREEN (or desired colors), MASTER SHINE or DRESDEN CLEAR GLAZE - 4" terra cotta rose pot or terra cotta style of choice

    2. Again with short bursts, spray this area with Mess Master to erratically blend colors together. Let dry.
    3. Hold the bottom of the pot with the rim turned sideways. Disregarding the label directions, point the nozzle close to the rim and spray a heavy coat of Saffron or Hunter Green around the rim and slightly below. As paint runs begin, rotate the pot to create an irregular edge. Allow paint to set before placing it upright. Let dry.
    4. Spray rimof pot heavily with Dresden Clear Glaze or triple thick Master Shine. Let drips run. For more control of drip pattern, hold pot as in step 3 and rotate to area desired for runs. Let dry.
To create the weathered look on pots to the right
    1. Lightly spray Hunter Green just below the rim. Then spray Mess Master over this to disipate the color. Let dry.
    2. At the base of the pots spray ColorTEX FLURRY to mimic salt accumulations.
Project Tip: To splatter color using an aerosol, push the spray tip forward while pressing down. Apply in short bursts. This will cause the spray to splatter. Normal application is to press straight down. MESS MASTER is the solvent to the sprays, it will blend the colors together.

    Cd%20tower%20copy.jpg

    TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Design Master Sprays- Home Decor Stain CHARCOAL, MACINTOSH, FOREST, THISTLE - Clear Finish MATTE Fine Grade Sandpaper - Tack Cloth - Soft Cloth or Paper Towel - Unfinished Wood CD Storage Unit - Silver Knobs

    Cd%20tower%20sm.jpg

    TECHNIQUE

    1. Remove knobs from drawers.
    2. Sand all surfaces of cabinet with fine grade sandpaper. Remove dust with a tack cloth.
    3. For the cabinet shell, use Home Décor Stain CHARCOAL. -- It is easier to apply the stain to segments of the cabinet, ie. right-side, back, left-side, bottom, top. Apply CHARCOAL close to wood until the surface is wet and glossy. Immediately wipe stain into grain with a soft cloth. (This step accentuates the wood grain. If an area of stain dries before wiping, simply spray additional stain to surface or into rag. It will reactivate the stain on the wood surface.) Don't worry about evenness of stain color. Different woods absorb the stain differently, but with following steps, the color can be evened out. Repeat this technique on all sides and surfaces of the cabinet.
    4. Let surface dry for a couple of minutes then apply an even coat of stain by spraying approx 12" from surface in a back and forth motion. Using this technique, you can even out the color from step 3 if needed. Apply stain to all sides of cabinet in this manner.
    5. Repeat Step 4 to deepen the color. The more coats applied, the deeper the color. The cabinet photographed has 2 light coats over the initial wiped coat.
    6. Allow surface to dry approx. 15 minutes. Then, seal the surface with several coats of CLEAR FINISH MATTE by spraying with the back and forth motion, 12" from surface. Allow finish to dry between coats. While the finish dries to the touch in minutes, the surface cures to a durable finish in 8 hours.
    7. Repeat Steps 3, 4, 5, and 6 on individual drawers using the MACINTOSH, FOREST and THISTLE stains. On the drawers, the stain was sprayed slightly heavier around perimeter of drawer to create a highlight in the center.
    8. Modern silver knobs were purchased to update the cabinet's look.
