Design Master Sprays- Home Decor Stain CHARCOAL, MACINTOSH, FOREST, THISTLE - Clear Finish MATTE Fine Grade Sandpaper - Tack Cloth - Soft Cloth or Paper Towel - Unfinished Wood CD Storage Unit - Silver Knobs
TECHNIQUE
- Remove knobs from drawers.
- Sand all surfaces of cabinet with fine grade sandpaper. Remove dust with a tack cloth.
- For the cabinet shell, use Home Décor Stain CHARCOAL. -- It is easier to apply the stain to segments of the cabinet, ie. right-side, back, left-side, bottom, top. Apply CHARCOAL close to wood until the surface is wet and glossy. Immediately wipe stain into grain with a soft cloth. (This step accentuates the wood grain. If an area of stain dries before wiping, simply spray additional stain to surface or into rag. It will reactivate the stain on the wood surface.) Don't worry about evenness of stain color. Different woods absorb the stain differently, but with following steps, the color can be evened out. Repeat this technique on all sides and surfaces of the cabinet.
- Let surface dry for a couple of minutes then apply an even coat of stain by spraying approx 12" from surface in a back and forth motion. Using this technique, you can even out the color from step 3 if needed. Apply stain to all sides of cabinet in this manner.
- Repeat Step 4 to deepen the color. The more coats applied, the deeper the color. The cabinet photographed has 2 light coats over the initial wiped coat.
- Allow surface to dry approx. 15 minutes. Then, seal the surface with several coats of CLEAR FINISH MATTE by spraying with the back and forth motion, 12" from surface. Allow finish to dry between coats. While the finish dries to the touch in minutes, the surface cures to a durable finish in 8 hours.
- Repeat Steps 3, 4, 5, and 6 on individual drawers using the MACINTOSH, FOREST and THISTLE stains. On the drawers, the stain was sprayed slightly heavier around perimeter of drawer to create a highlight in the center.
- Modern silver knobs were purchased to update the cabinet's look.
